One man wants to create a human chain to block a nudist group planning a 7km bike ride next month from Omanu to Papamoa (New Zealand).

The ride, called Tauranga New Zealand World Naked Bike Ride, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 10 and will begin at 2:30pm.  Contrary to popular belief, the ride is NOT being held to promote nudism but instead to protest about car emissions.

The World Naked Bike Ride is held in 70 cities and in 20 countries but this will be the first time it will be held in Tauranga.

The ride’s organizer, Andrew Pointon, said that ride participants can wear as little, or as much, as they would like.  He adds that most people will be clothed a few minutes prior and minutes after the ride.

Residents who live along the cycle route are outraged by the idea of a naked bike ride.  The issue of nudity was previously a problem for residents after a Bay of Plenty Naturists event at Papamoa Beach drew about 60 nudists.

One resident, Ben De Kleynen, said that if he could get enough support he would form a human chain preventing the riders from going any further. His argument stems on the basis that they are holding a nudist even in an area where families and children will be.  “It’s the provocation,” he’s against.
